I wanted to use one of them to compliment my main HDD as a backup drive. Seems I was wrong. But Vista won't let me initialize get the "Cannot find the file specified" error or reformat because it won't initialize.

It is particularly useful for users who write data to the array on a regular basis, and can also be used as a scratch disc for certain applications. The feature was introduced in version 4. A cache disk is a hard drive that is not part of the normal parity-protected array.
You may read data from or write data to the cache share just as you would any other disk share. As the cache disk is outside of the parity-protected array, writes will be much faster, but of course if this disk fails, all its data may be lost. The real power of a cache disk is realized when User Shares are enabled. Hence any object — a file or directory - created on a user share is created on the cache disk provided that enough space is available.
Therefore, when you browse the files on a user share, the listings will transparently include objects on the cache disk as well as those on the other data disks. The default schedule is to wake up at AM every day. As there is a lag between the time objects are created on the cache disk, and when they are moved to the array, it may be desirable to disable the cache disk for certain shares.
Each user share therefore has the option to disable the use of the cache disk for that share. This section is present on the Share Settings page when user shares are enabled, and a cache disk is present and formatted. If there is less than this amount of free space then the object will be created on the array instead. The emphasis here is on 'perceived'. The real, behind-the-scenes write speed of your unRAID server is unchanged by the addition of a cache drive.
A cache drive simply grants you the fastest transfer that your hardware will allow by deferring the inevitable parity calculation until a later time am server time, by default.
How much of a write speed improvement can you expect to see from using a cache drive? That depends on your hardware. Slower hardware will of course result in slower transfer speeds.
Without a cache drive: unRAID 4. With a cache drive: unRAID 4.
Unleash Your Hardware
So generally speaking, a server with a cache drive has write speeds x faster than the same server without a cache drive. The Mover is a utility that runs periodically to move files off the cache disk and onto parity-protected data disk s. If Mover logging is enabled, the mover will record all its activity to the system log. By default the mover is scheduled to run every day at AM. If the mover finds no files to move, and the disks are spun-down, the disks will not spin up. A warm spare is a hard drive that you have installed in your server to prepare for the eventuality of one of your other hard drives failing.
It requires that the warm spare drive be as large or larger than your parity drive and your largest data drive. When a drive does eventually fail, you simply stop the array via the Main pageunassign the dead drive via the Devices pageassign the warm spare also on the Devices pageand then start the array back on the Main page.
At this point, your data from the dead drive will be automatically rebuilt onto your warm spare - this will take many hours, but your array and all your data is still available for use during this time though performance will likely be degraded.
However, why not use a warm spare as a cache drive while you wait around for another drive to fail? This application will of course add a bit of wear and tear to your warm spare, but nothing outside the scope of ordinary use.
As a cache drive is outside of the parity-protected array, it can be used for alternate software and unRAID add-ons that need to read and write data often. I forgot to mention that if you prefer you can also easily change the UUID on a xfs disk, once the disk is unassigned and before mounting type:. While I'm at it might as well ask one more question. I noticed my cache drive has a pending sector.

I don't know why but I always get nervous when replacing a disk. I'm in the middle of the process and booted up and assigned my new disk as disk 1 which it's replacing. Below it is says "wrong". Correct me if I'm After that is done, I want to remove Disk 5 from the array and use it as an assigned device. If I'm correct I believe once I unassign the drive disk 5 from the array, at that point I then need to run a parity check.
Is that correct? Ok, need just a bit more help I unassigned the drive, before starting up do I go to Tools, New Config and create a new one, then do the parity sync?
Oh, one other question. Go back to main, all disks except the one you unassigned should be correctly assigned, if yes start the array to begin the parity sync. You can, but using USB disks is not recommended and should be avoided whenever possible, even as unassigned devices. I started a preclear on my cache drive to see if it fixes the pending sector. So I started a new install of unraid 6 using a couple of new 4 and 5 tb drives. I have an existing 2 tb drive from my unraid 5 server.
The new drives formatted to xfs, the old one is still reiserfs. Will this matter? I've tried to reformat it to xfs but it hasn't worked. First it tells me to stop the array to reformat, but when I do the option isn't available. I've clicked on the drive and changed filetype to xfs but it swaps back to auto and stays as reiserfs. It should work to Stop array, then click on the device in question. On that page, select 'XFS' as the file system type, click Apply.
Now back to Main, Start array and that disk should come up 'unmountable' and there should be a Format button - if all appears as I describe, click it! While RFS will work, many users, myself included, experience performance issues especially with larger drives as the become full. I would recommend migrating to XFS.
If you stoo the array, and then click on the disk, you should see the format as reiserfs or auto. Change it to xfs and save the configuration. When you restart the array the drive should appear as unmountable and offer an option to format it.
Parity is maintained through this process. Note that all of the data on the drive will be lost when you format it, so please ensure that all useful data has been successfully migrated to other disks beforehand.

Ok thanks for the updates, I will be giving this a go very soon. It's going to be a very long process with 10 disks and over 16TB of data to move around but I'm hearing that the effort is well worth it in the end. I can also confirm this process works. I started by adding a new data disk as XFS. Then, migrated data from one disk to the next, stopped the array, changed the format setting, started the array, and hit the format button.
It's really just that simple. Parity has no concept of files or file systems. If at any point you mess with sd? I am replacing three of my old drives that are showing signs of impending failure.
They are all original disks formatted in reiserfs. I would like to migrate to xfs format. I have precleared three new WD red 3TB disks. The first disk replacement I tried was one precleared but unformatted 3Tb drive. I stopped the machine and swapped the disks, then started up again and selected the new HDD in place of the old drive. Parity sync and rebuild took place fine but the format is still reiserfs despite the default now being xfs.
I have now mounted the other two drives as unassigned disks and formatted them as xfs. My question is: when I swap them into the array as replacements for the two reiserf drives, will the format remain xfs, or will it revert to the original drive format? If I were to transfer all data onto the new drives whilst they are still mounted as Unassigned drives, would this make a difference when I swap them in?

Unassigned Devices UD includes a lot of functionality and has become a bit complex. Please be aware of the following before you start using UD. There are different operations in various active areas especially the disk serial number based on whether or not the disk drive is mounted. Press Enter for the name change to be applied.
This will now become the mount point and the share name when the disk is shared. In order to share any UD device, sharing needs to be enabled in the UD Settings and the switch turned on to share the particular device.
SSD disks formatted with xfs, btrfs, or ext4 will be mounted with 'discard'. This includes encrypted disks. Reiserfs does not support discard. Mounting with 'discard' can be turned off in the UD Settings. An encrypted array disk can be mounted in UD with the following restrictions:. The array disk passphrase has to be defined. You cannot enter the passphrase for the disk in UD.
The disk can only be mounted if the current array passphrase is the same as the UD encrypted disk. Note: There has to be at least one encrypted disk in the array. Note: UD disks add to the total disks allowed by the Unraid license you have purchased except for a Pro license.
